Flaxseed is
Flaxseed is the seed of a plant belonging to the Linum genus, known for its distinctive purple flowers. It is believed to have been first cultivated approximately 8,000 to 10,000 years ago in the fertile valleys of the Mesopotamian region. For thousands of years, flaxseed has been used both as a food source and as a raw material for textiles (linen). Numerous records in the medical texts of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome document its use for disease prevention and therapeutic purposes.
Flaxseed is characterized by its high nutritional value, containing approximately 41% fat, 20% protein, and 28% dietary fiber. It is particularly recognized as an excellent source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid, as well as lignans, a type of plant-derived estrogen, and water-soluble dietary fiber. Notably, flaxseed contains exceptionally high levels of lignan precursors, ranging from 75 to 800 times higher than those found in most vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, and other seeds. These compounds have been shown to contribute to the prevention of certain cancers, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer.
Lignans possess a chemical structure similar to that of the female hormone estrogen, allowing them to bind to estrogen receptors on cell membranes. Depending on the presence and activity of endogenous estrogen in the body, lignans may function either as estrogen-like compounds or as estrogen antagonists, demonstrating a unique dual biological role.
